She followed with a delightful ditty, “Sandi with an ‘I,’” in which she cleverly changed the lyrics of “Liza with a Z” to fit her own situation in regard to the misspelling of her first and last names. Patty began her performance with a vibrant interpretation of “That’s Entertainment” that literally set the tone for what was to come. Throughout her set, Patty, who projected the warmth, sincerity and generosity of spirit she is known for, connected with the audience the moment she bounded on stage. Best known as a Christian-music icon with a distinctive soprano voice and wide, expressive range, Patty handily demonstrated she can also sing secular music and may be one of the best jazz singers out there, as she performed songs from the Great American Songbook and a few tunes from her Christian repertoire. Taking the stage for Act 2 was Patty, accompanied by her top-notch trio comprising Steve Potts on piano, local artist Steve Dokken on bass, and Patty’s long-time drummer Steve Hanna.

The bike smells like gasoline and makes a lot of noise, and sometimes I'm frightened when the wheels slip on the gravel on the dirt road, but the only thing that matters is that I'm holding on to him, that I'm holding on to him outside. The chapters describing this metamorphosis are delivered in the hosanna-drenched, homily-sprinkled style common among 12-steppers, who never seem to hold God responsible for their travails but invariably credit Him with their salvation. At 25, Brown woke up behind a Dumpster and embarked on a period of detox and recovery. She discovered a sense of family in the notorious Crips street gang, but after she was temporarily paralyzed at age 15 as the result of a drive-by shooting, Brown gave up “banging.” That didn’t much slow her descent into extreme drug abuse, serial abortions and domestic violence. She was routinely abused by her sadistic foster mother, yet no matter how many times she escaped, the perversely ineffectual legal system insisted on returning her to her tormentor. On her second night in a foster home, Brown was raped on the bathroom floor. Everything plunged downhill from there, as Brown relates in a narrative couched in street slang interspersed with interior monologues (literary devices that the author at times fails to pull off). Harrowing, earnest autobiography takes readers on a tour from incomprehensible evil through unexpected kindness to eventual triumph.īrown’s story begins in January 1976, when, at age 11, she discovered the body of her mother, dead from a seizure, on the bedroom floor of their home in a San Diego ghetto. That's really the theme of Fly Away-how to let go of someone you love and go on." She added: "The loss of Kate upended Tully and really weakened her. She no longer had anyone to hold onto and no one to love her. Once Tully begins to feel her grief, it opens up the sense of abandonment and loss that has always been just below the surface. It can take you years to get back on your feet. Speaking to Book Reporter, Hannah said: "Because I lost my own mother when I was much too young, I know intimately that one person can sometimes hold an entire family together, and the loss of that person is devastating. The book flits between the perspectives of Johnny, Cloud (named Dorothy in the book), and Marah as they grapple with the death (or near-death) of both Firefly Lane girls. 'Fly Away' follows the aftermath of Kate's death.Īs for the sequel, Fly Away, it opens with Tully getting into a life-threatening car accident in the aftermath of Kate's death-I know as if things weren't bleak enough-and ending up in a coma. There are really two stories going on at once. It contains maps, “mummy cloth” samples, postcards and travel tags that look appropriately vintage, and page after page of sketches and “diary entries” about life in Ancient Egypt. Like Dragonology, Egyptology is an interactive book aimed at kids in elementary school. When her diary was discovered, nearly eighty years later, it was published in a facsimile so that scholars could benefit from Ms. However, Emily Sands and her expedition disappeared without a trace, and her family long suspected that she had fallen victim to bandits or wild beasts. As she traveled down the Nile, Sands recorded her observations in a diary. She was armed with a mysterious papyrus and funded by her patroness, the Lady Farncombe. In 1926, the ambitious Egyptologist Emily Sands set out with an expedition to uncover the long lost Tomb of Osiris, the mythical king turned god of the dead in the Egyptian pantheon. This year, I thought it would be fun to look back and review some of my favorite volumes from the series. Every year, a new book would come out, and the quality of each volume was such that in spite of the fact that I was well outside the intended audience age range, I had to check them out. I remember thinking at the time that it was the perfect Christmas present for a kid. Back in 2003, Dragonology hit bookstore shelves, launching the “Ologies” series. I can also say that, like various other commentators (e.g., Peter Woit), I personally find the “Mathematical Universe Hypothesis” to be devoid of content.Īfter Peter Woit found that comment and highlighted it on his own blog, my comments section was graced by none other than Tegmark himself, who wrote: …I find Max a fascinating person, a wonderful conference organizer, someone who’s always been extremely nice to me personally, and an absolute master at finding common ground with his intellectual opponents-I’m trying to learn from him, and hope someday to become 10 -122 as good. Two months ago, commenter rrtucci asked me what I thought about Max Tegmark and his “Mathematical Universe Hypothesis”: the idea, which Tegmark defends in his recent book Our Mathematical Universe, that physical and mathematical existence are the same thing, and that what we call “the physical world” is simply one more mathematical structure, alongside the dodecahedron and so forth.
